The Broadway Residence is sited on a deep narrow lot with an existing concrete block shop at the back property line. The shop footprint and walls were retained, influencing not only the siting of the project but also the material choices for the addition. Designed for a couple who had adult children who remained close as a family. They had keen interest and knowledge in the fine arts which helped to generate a more expressive form for the house that also brought in color block shapes following the early modern and late modern painters such as Yves Klein and Matisse, and Elsworth Kelly. A primary bedroom suite and creator’s studio is located on the second floor, with a flexible casual layout, minimized doors and sliding panels.

The result is a modern open plan for community spaces with smaller private rooms for sleeping, studying, and creating. A custom designed steel stair is a foil for the bedrooms beyond and also a sculptural element in the dining space. A request for courtyard spaces to encourage living inside and out led to developing the detached garage as a sculptural element and visual block to the street. The drive of concrete pavers with grass growing between combined with an ally of mature Aspen trees provides for an extension of community space at a larger scale for future gatherings and the sense of an older European town villa that might be found in France.

The clients hold a deep commitment to sustainable living, present in the reuse of the existing shop building, building on a town lot, and solar panels are planned for the roof top on the primary bedroom suite.
