Great joy is often found in color. The Red House was designed with such aspirations in mind. A compact two-story house built in the small town of Livingston, Montana and designed not only for the colorful life of its owner, but conceived as a garden home that provides opportunities to gather for a dinner party and cocktails or enjoy an evening with friends playing guitar in the music room that faces the street.
The 2,322 SF house sits a stone’s throw from the famous Yellowstone river with views of iconic Livingston Peak to the south from its second floor balcony. The original elevation of the site was below the FEMA recognized level for 100 year floods. To account for potential flooding the house site was raised and compacted above the flood plain and the planted ground area was finished with topsoil for a garden of perennials and fruit trees. The house is built with an economical mono-slab to further reduce impact of flooding.
Standing out from its neighbors the house exterior is clad with red corrugated steel on walls and roof with the exception of the entry panels in orange and the summer blue underside of the long steel awning. While vibrant, all exterior materials were selected for their minimal maintenance, not only providing a home that is resilient in its construction, but one that also allows for more time enjoying the experiences of life and home in Montana.
